Over the past few weeks, second grade students have been learning about the Westward Expansion. Some things we learned about were pioneers traveling on the Oregon Trail, the Pony Express, the Trail of Tears, the Erie Canal, and the Transcontinental Railroad.
Last week second graders dressed up as pioneers as a culminating activity to our Westward Expansion unit. Students made a class quilt by tying cloths together in knots. We also played pioneer games, such as checkers and cards, in our covered wagon. We built log cabin homes out of Lincoln logs and gave a try at making homemade butter in a jar. Students were able to eat the butter they made with corn bread muffins and saltine crackers. The butter was a hit and students found it to be delicious. They also said it was a lot of work to make the butter. It was a fun day and students enjoyed being pioneers!
